Poppy Power

Our friends in Tychy have put together a stunning display of artwork focusing on the poppy which is a powerful symbol of peace.

Poppies form an important part of remembrance day celebrations in the UK.  Wreaths are laid at the Cenotaph in London on the Sunday closest to 11th November.  In November 2014, to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War our school took part in a special National online assembly broadcast live from the Tower of London.  It included music and poetry as well as lots of information about the First World War.  We learnt about the poppy art installation at the Tower called ‘ Blood Swept Land and Seas of Red’ created by Paul Cummins to mark 100 years since the first full day of British involvement in World War One.  It contains 888,246 ceramic poppies, one for each British military casualty.

Finding Out About Where We All Live – Skype Presentations

Finding Out About Where We All Live – Skype Presentations

The children in each of the schools have been finding out about each other’s towns and schools.  Each school put together a presentation about their town.  It contained information about where the towns are in their country and showed pictures of famous landmarks.  We discovered a little more about what life is like for each other.

Technology doesn’t always work (!) but we enjoyed seeing some of the children we will meet and finding out about Tychy and Kortrijk.

Have a look at the pictures below of the towns of Tychy and Kotrijk. Click on each picture to find out more about each town.

The Start of the Project

The Start of the Project

Godinton Primary School is delighted to be working in partnership with Sint-Paulus School in Kortrijk, Belgium and Szkola Podstawowa nr 18 in Tychy, Poland on an exciting collaborative project entitled ‘Show and Tell – No More Wars.’  The project started following a successful bid for European funding as part of the Erasmus initiative which is designed to provide children across Europe with opportunities to discover more about each other’s cultures and to celebrate the rich diversity of their lives. Launched to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World war, the project will see children working together on art, drama, music and poetry activities which demonstrate a shared desire for peace and reconciliation.
