The children will be flying on a British Airways flight.  They are flying to the city of Krakow which is about one hour’s drive from Tychy.  Can you find Krakow on the map above?

The time in Poland is one hour ahead of UK time.  So when you start school at 9.00 in the morning it will be 10.00 in Poland.

Finding Out about the First and Second World Wars

In preparation for our visit we have been finding out about the impact of the First and Second World War on Britain, Poland and Belgium. Have a look at the Powerpoint we have put together.  We have learnt that some of the events of both wars were very complicated.

Click on the photographs below to open a power point about each of the World wars in Europe.

Learning the Language

We are lucky that our friends in Poland and Belgium speak good English.  We don’t know any Polish or Dutch (the language that is spoken in Kortrijk). During lunchtimes the children who will be visting Poland have been trying to some learn some Polish language.  We have found some of the sounds quite difficult.

If you fancy learning some Polish words and phrases, then why not visit this website which has lots of useful interactive videos you can watch!

Poppy Power

Our friends in Tychy have put together a stunning display of artwork focusing on the poppy which is a powerful symbol of peace.

poppies

Poppies form an important part of remembrance day celebrations in the UK.  Wreaths are laid at the Cenotaph in London on the Sunday closest to 11th November.  In November 2014, to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War our school took part in a special National online assembly broadcast live from the Tower of London.  It included music and poetry as well as lots of information about the First World War.  We learnt about the poppy art installation at the Tower called ‘ Blood Swept Land and Seas of Red’ created by Paul Cummins to mark 100 years since the first full day of British involvement in World War One.  It contains 888,246 ceramic poppies, one for each British military casualty.
